Claude Code Pricing 2026: Pro vs Max vs Team vs API (USD + AUD)

by Sandlabs Team, Founder, Sandlabs

Quick answer. Claude Code has no price of its own, and it is not free: the Free plan does not include it. You get it with Pro (US$20/month, or US$17 on annual billing), Max 5× (US$100), Max 20× (US$200), a Team seat (US$25, or US$20 annual; Premium US$125 or US$100), or Enterprise (US$20/seat plus usage at API rates), or by paying per token through a Claude Console account. Viewed from Australia, new subscriptions are now listed in AUD with GST included: Pro A$34 (A$28 on annual billing), Max A$170 or A$340, and Team A$43 (A$34 annual) per Standard seat. The real decision is headroom, not price: Pro suits a few sessions a week, daily use needs Max 5×, and all-day or parallel-agent work needs Max 20×. Anthropic's own figure for API-billed developers is about US$13 per active day, so if you code with Claude on more than about eight days a month, Max 5× is cheaper than the API.

Every figure below was checked against Anthropic's live pricing page and help centre on 20 October 2026.

People searching for Claude Code pricing are usually one of two buyers: a developer working out whether the US$20 plan will carry their work, or a business owner who has just been asked to approve a A$340 line item. Both need the same answer - what each plan actually buys in Claude Code time, and where the API fits.

Is Claude Code free?

No. The CLI costs nothing to install, but it will not do any work until you sign in with one of three things:

  • A paid Claude plan: Pro, Max, Team or Enterprise.
  • A Claude Console account with API credit, billed per token at standard API rates.
  • A cloud provider account on Amazon Bedrock, Google Cloud or Microsoft Foundry, billed per token through your cloud bill.

Anthropic's plan comparison lists Claude Code as not included on Free, and its help centre says there is no standing discount for individual plans.

The confusion usually comes from Max, which now includes US$100-200 a month in API credits. Those credits do not cover interactive Claude Code, which we unpack in the API credits section below.

Two things in that table are worth reading twice. First, every paid plan shares one usage pool between Claude Code and ordinary Claude chats, so a long research session in the morning leaves less for coding in the afternoon. Second, Anthropic's pricing page now has a Developer tab that shows only Pro, Max 5× and Max 20×, which tells you how Anthropic expects individual developers to buy.

How much Claude Code each plan actually gets you

Anthropic publishes multipliers, not hours. Its pricing FAQ says Pro gives at least 5× the Free plan's usage per five-hour session, Max gives 5× or 20× Pro, a Team Standard seat gives more than Pro, and a Premium seat gives 5× a Standard seat. Every paid plan also has a weekly limit, and Max adds a separate weekly limit for Fable.

What that means in practice, from the Claude Code rollouts we run:

  • Pro is occasional Claude Code. A few focused sessions a week is comfortable. A full day of agentic work on a real codebase usually hits the five-hour cap by early afternoon, and doing that daily runs into the weekly cap.
  • Max 5× is daily Claude Code. It is the floor for anyone who uses Claude Code on most working days.
  • Max 20× is continuous or parallel work. Several sessions at once, heavy subagent use, or agent teams. Anthropic's docs put agent teams at roughly 7× the tokens of a standard session when teammates run in plan mode.
  • Team Standard sits above Pro. Fine for people who dip into Claude Code; full-time users belong on Premium.
  • Enterprise has no plan ceiling in the same sense. Usage is billed at API rates, so budget it like the API.

Model choice moves all of this. At API rates Opus 5.5 costs twice what Sonnet 5.5 does per token and Fable 5.1 five times, and Anthropic is explicit that the model you choose changes how far a plan goes. Sonnet handles most coding work, which is also Anthropic's own advice in the Claude Code docs.

Two newer details matter for heavy users. When you hit the five-hour limit mid-response, Claude Code now gets a small wrap-up allowance to finish the step in progress (once per week on Pro, each time on Max). And instead of waiting for a reset, Pro and Max users can turn on usage credits and keep working at API rates. One catch: on a subscription the prompt cache lasts an hour, but it drops to five minutes once you are drawing on usage credits, so credit-funded sessions burn faster after every break.

Our usage limits guide covers what actually consumes your allowance and how to stretch it.

When the API is cheaper than a subscription

Instead of a plan, you can sign Claude Code in to a Claude Console account and pay standard API rates. Anthropic's help centre suggests exactly that for intensive coding sprints.

ModelInput (per 1M tokens)Output (per 1M tokens)Cache read (per 1M tokens)
Fable 5.1US$10US$50US$0.25
Opus 5.5US$4US$20US$0.20
Sonnet 5.5US$2US$10US$0.10
Haiku 5.5 (prompts up to 100K tokens)US$0.10US$0.50US$0.01

Token rates are hard to reason about for an agent that reads files, runs commands and re-reads its own context hundreds of times an hour. Anthropic's Claude Code docs give the number that matters instead: across enterprise deployments, the average is around US$13 per developer per active day and US$150-250 per developer per month, with 90% of users below US$30 per active day. Those are API-rate figures, about A$20 a day at the exchange rate implied by Anthropic's AUD prices.

Divide each plan's price by that daily average and you get a break-even:

PlanMonthly priceAverage API days it pays for
ProUS$20~1.5 days
Max 5×US$100~8 days
Max 20×US$200~15 days
Team Premium (annual)US$100~8 days

So the rule of thumb is simple.

The API is cheaper if you use Claude Code on only a day or two a month, if your usage comes in bursts (a sprint a quarter), or for automation. CI jobs and scheduled scripts that call claude -p with an API key are the wrong shape for a personal subscription anyway.

A subscription is cheaper for anyone coding with Claude on most working days, as long as they stay inside the plan's limits. A developer at the US$13 average across 20 working days would spend about US$260 a month at API rates, against US$100-200 for Max.

The heavy tail is where Max wins outright. One in ten users runs above US$30 per active day, which is US$600 or more a month at API rates. Max 20× caps that at US$200.

Two caveats. Anthropic's averages come from enterprise deployments, not hobby projects, so your number can be lower. And a subscription can still stop you at a limit where the API would not; if being blocked mid-sprint costs more than the tokens, keep a funded Console account or usage credits as insurance. For the per-token maths behind API workloads more generally, see our Claude API cost optimisation guide.

Max's API credits: what they do and do not cover

Max 5× includes US$100 a month and Max 20× includes US$200 a month in Claude Platform credits. Team plans get US$20 per Standard seat and US$100 per Premium seat, pooled and capped at US$500 a month. Pro and Enterprise get none.

The catch for Claude Code users, per Anthropic's help centre: the credits do not cover interactive Claude Code in the terminal, IDE, desktop app or web, and they cannot pay for usage credits once you hit your plan limit. They do cover:

  • the Claude API, including the Message Batches API
  • the Console Playground, Claude Managed Agents and the Claude Agent SDK
  • claude -p and the Agent SDK when you run them with an API key from your linked Console organisation

If you run claude -p signed in with your plan instead, it draws on your plan limits, not the credits. Runs started by the Claude Code GitHub Action, an IDE extension or the desktop app count as Claude Code usage, so the credits do not cover those either.

The credits expire at the end of each billing cycle, you must be on the plan for seven days before you can claim them, and they go to exactly one Console organisation that you cannot change yourself.

So the credits are real value if you also build things - a nightly triage script, a prototype agent, a CI step that calls Claude with an API key. They are not extra Claude Code hours. Our Is Claude Max worth it? breakdown covers the rest of the Max decision.

Claude Code for teams: Standard, Premium or Enterprise

Every Team seat includes Claude Code, and you can mix seat types on one plan. The pattern we set up most often is Standard seats for people who mostly use Claude for documents and analysis, and Premium seats for the people who live in Claude Code.

Here is a six-person business with two developers, priced from Australia with GST included.

SetupMonthly billingAnnual billing (per month)Admin console, SSO, shared Projects
4 Team Standard + 2 Team PremiumA$598A$476Yes
4 Pro + 2 Max 5× (individual plans)A$476A$452 (Pro annual, Max monthly)No

In US dollars the Team setup is US$350 a month, or US$280 on annual billing.

On annual billing the Team plan costs about A$24 a month more than six individual subscriptions. For that you get central billing and one invoice, SSO, shared Projects, organisation-wide Skills, no model training on your content by default, and US$280 a month in pooled API credits instead of the US$200 the two Max seats would bring. Premium seats also carry more usage than Max 5×, since a Premium seat is 5× a Standard seat and a Standard seat is already above Pro.

Enterprise is US$20 per seat per month, billed annually with a 20-seat minimum, plus usage at API rates. For a Claude Code-heavy organisation, budget the seat fee plus Anthropic's US$150-250 per developer per month, and set user and organisation spend limits from day one. It earns its place when you need SCIM, audit logs, role-based access or custom data retention. Our Team vs. Enterprise comparison covers where that line sits.

Australian buyers: AUD, GST and the ABN

New subscriptions are priced in AUD with GST included. Viewed from Australia, Anthropic's pricing page lists Pro at A$34 a month (A$340 a year), Max at A$170 or A$340, and Team at A$43 per Standard seat (A$34 on annual billing). Anthropic's help centre says plans are priced in local currency where supported, and that some regions include tax in the displayed price. Australia is now one of them.

Older subscriptions may still be in USD. Anthropic's invoice help explains that existing subscribers can stay on an older currency, and that switching means letting the plan end at the close of its term and buying again. If you signed up in USD, your card still converts at the day's rate and most Australian cards add a 2-3% foreign transaction fee.

API usage is per token and listed in USD. Console billing and cloud-provider billing sit outside the plan prices above.

The ABN question. Checkout still has a tax ID field. On USD billing, entering an ABN stopped Anthropic charging GST; whether it takes 10% off an AUD price that already includes GST is something to confirm on your first invoice. Our Claude GST guide covers the rules and the BAS side.

The AUD prices imply roughly A$1.55 per US dollar before GST, which is the rate we use for any AUD conversion on this page.

Three ways people overpay for Claude Code

1. A stray ANTHROPIC_API_KEY environment variable. If one is set, Claude Code uses it instead of your subscription and you pay API rates for work your plan already covers. Anthropic's help centre calls this out specifically. Unset the variable and run /login to sign in with your plan.

2. Accepting API credits at the limit with auto-reload on. When you hit a plan limit, Claude Code can offer to continue on Console credits, and if auto-reload is enabled the Console tops itself up. Decline the offer, or turn auto-reload off in Console billing, if you want to stay inside your plan.

3. Long sessions on the most expensive model. Claude Code sends the whole conversation with every request, so a session left open all day keeps re-reading its history. Anthropic's docs name long, never-cleared sessions and Opus as the default model as the usual causes of unexpectedly high spend. Use /clear between unrelated tasks, default to Sonnet, and check /usage to see where your allowance went.

Which Claude Code plan should you buy?

  • Trying it out, or a few sessions a week: Pro, on monthly billing until you know your pattern.
  • Claude Code on most working days: Max 5×. Start here rather than at 20×.
  • All day, parallel sessions or agent teams: Max 20×.
  • Two or more people: Team, with Premium seats for the developers.
  • 20 or more seats with compliance requirements: Enterprise, budgeted as seat fee plus API-rate usage.
  • A day or two a month, or automation in CI: the API through a Console account, with a workspace spend limit.

If you are setting up Claude Code across a development team and want the plan mix, spend limits and shared conventions right the first time, our Claude Code CLI guide and hooks guide are the practical starting points, or talk to us about doing it with you.

Is Claude Code free?

No. The Claude Code CLI is free to install, but it only works when you sign in with a paid Claude plan (Pro, Max, Team or Enterprise), a Claude Console account billed per token at API rates, or a cloud provider such as Amazon Bedrock, Google Cloud or Microsoft Foundry. The Free Claude plan does not include Claude Code, and Anthropic does not offer standing discounts on individual plans. The US$100-200 of monthly API credits included with Max do not cover interactive Claude Code either.

How much does Claude Code cost per month?

Claude Code has no separate price. It is included with Pro at US$20 a month (US$17 on annual billing), Max 5× at US$100, Max 20× at US$200, Team at US$25 per Standard seat (US$20 annual) or US$125 per Premium seat (US$100 annual), and Enterprise at US$20 per seat plus usage at API rates. You can also skip the subscription and pay per token through a Claude Console account; Anthropic puts the average API-billed developer at about US$13 per active day.

Is Claude Code included with Claude Pro?

Yes. Claude Code is included in every paid plan, including Pro, at no extra cost. It shares the same usage pool as your Claude chats, with a rolling five-hour session limit and a weekly limit. In practice Pro comfortably supports a few focused Claude Code sessions a week; people who use it on most working days generally need Max 5× or a Team Premium seat.

How much is Claude Code in Australia?

Viewed from Australia, Anthropic now lists new subscriptions in AUD with GST included: Pro is A$34 a month or A$28 a month on annual billing (A$340 up front), Max 5× is A$170 and Max 20× is A$340 a month, and Team is A$43 per Standard seat (A$34 annual) or A$213 per Premium seat (A$170 annual). Older subscriptions that started in USD can stay in USD until they lapse and are bought again. API usage through the Console is billed per token in USD.

Is the Claude API cheaper than a subscription for Claude Code?

Only for light or bursty use. Anthropic reports an average of about US$13 per developer per active day at API rates across enterprise deployments, and US$150-250 per developer per month. That means Pro pays for itself after about 1.5 average days a month, Max 5× after about eight and Max 20× after about fifteen. If you code with Claude on most working days, a subscription is cheaper; if you use it a day or two a month, or for automation in CI, the API is.

Can I use Claude Max API credits for Claude Code?

Not for interactive Claude Code. Anthropic says the monthly API credits on Max (US$100 or US$200) and Team plans do not cover Claude Code in the terminal, IDE, desktop or web, and cannot pay for usage credits after you hit a plan limit. They do cover the Claude API, Managed Agents, the Agent SDK, and claude -p when you run it with an API key from your linked Console organisation. Credits expire each billing cycle.

Do Claude Code and Claude chat share the same usage limits?

Yes. On Pro, Max, Team and Enterprise, activity in Claude Code and in Claude on web, desktop and mobile draws from one pool with a rolling five-hour session limit and a weekly limit, and Max adds a separate weekly limit for Fable. When you hit a limit you can wait for the reset, move to a bigger plan, or turn on usage credits billed at standard API rates.

Which Claude Code plan should a small team buy?

For two or more people, a Team plan with mixed seats usually wins: Standard seats for people who mostly use Claude for documents and analysis, and Premium seats for the developers. A six-person business with two developers pays about A$476 a month on annual billing including GST, roughly A$24 more than equivalent individual Pro and Max plans, and gets central billing, SSO, shared Projects, no model training by default and pooled API credits. Enterprise makes sense from 20 seats when you need SCIM, audit logs or custom data retention.
