Does Anthropic Charge GST in Australia? Claude Invoices, ABNs and Your BAS

by Sandlabs Team, Founder, Sandlabs

Quick answer. Yes. Anthropic adds 10% Australian GST to Claude subscriptions by default, because offshore digital services sold to Australian consumers have been in the GST net since July 2017. The important part: if you are a GST-registered business and you enter your ABN under Settings → Billing, Anthropic stops charging GST on future invoices, because business-to-business supplies fall outside those consumer rules. Skip that step and you are likely paying 10% you cannot recover, since offshore suppliers on simplified GST registration hold an ARN rather than an ABN and generally cannot issue a tax invoice supporting a GST credit. It takes two minutes and Anthropic only applies it forward.

Update, 20 October 2026: Claude is now priced in AUD from Australia. Viewed from Australia, Anthropic's pricing page lists Pro, Max and Team in AUD with GST included: Pro A$34 a month (A$28 on annual billing), Max A$170 or A$340, and Team A$34 per Standard seat on annual billing or A$43 monthly (A$170 / A$213 for Premium seats). Subscriptions that started in USD can stay in USD until they lapse and are bought again, and API usage is still billed per token in USD, so everything below applies to them unchanged. For AUD-priced subscriptions, check how GST is shown on your first invoice before assuming the ABN step takes 10% off.

This is the single most common billing question we get from Australian clients buying Claude, and it is worth about A$3 a month on Pro and A$30 a month on Max 20× - small money that compounds quietly across a team and across a year.

A note before we start: this is general information about how the GST rules apply to a common software purchase, not tax advice. Your circumstances, particularly around apportionment for mixed business and private use, may change the answer. Run it past your accountant.

Why Anthropic charges GST at all

Anthropic is a US company with no Australian presence, which used to mean no GST. That changed on 1 July 2017, when Australia extended GST to what the ATO calls inbound intangible consumer supplies - imported services and digital products sold to Australian consumers. It is the same rule that put GST on Netflix, Spotify, Adobe and every other offshore subscription, and it is why people still call it the "Netflix tax".

The rule has a deliberate boundary built into it: it applies to consumers, not to businesses.

An offshore supplier only has to charge GST when the buyer is an Australian consumer. When the buyer is an Australian business that is registered for GST and acquiring the service for business purposes, the supply falls outside the consumer rules and the supplier does not charge GST.

The supplier cannot know which one you are. So they default to treating you as a consumer and adding 10%, and they give you a field to tell them otherwise. That field is your ABN.

The two-minute fix

  1. Open Claude and go to Settings → Billing.
  2. Find the tax or ABN field - it sits behind the Update control next to your payment method.
  3. Enter your ABN and confirm you are registered for GST.
  4. Save.

From your next invoice, the 10% comes off.

Do this before you subscribe if you can. Anthropic applies billing changes forward only, and states that completed invoices cannot be updated retroactively. Getting a past invoice reissued with the correct tax treatment means raising a support request, and you may not get anywhere.

The same field and the same logic apply to USD-billed Pro and Max subscriptions and to API usage billed through the Console. New Pro, Max and Team subscriptions bought from Australia are now listed in AUD with GST included, so treat those invoices separately (see the update above).

Why you probably cannot just claim the GST back

This is the part that catches people, and it is the reason the ABN step matters more than it looks.

The instinct is reasonable: "GST was charged, I am registered, I will claim the credit on my BAS." But claiming a GST credit requires a valid tax invoice, and a valid tax invoice needs the supplier's ABN.

Offshore suppliers selling digital services into Australia commonly register under the ATO's simplified GST registration system. Entities in that system are issued an ATO Reference Number (ARN), not an ABN - and the ATO is explicit that if you hold an ARN you cannot hold an ABN. Simplified registration exists precisely for suppliers who only collect GST on consumer sales and do not need to claim credits themselves.

The practical consequence for you: GST charged by a simplified-registration supplier generally does not support an input tax credit, because the documentation to substantiate one does not exist. The 10% is not recoverable. It is just cost.

Which flips the framing entirely. The ABN field is not an administrative nicety - it is the difference between a 10% cost and no cost at all.

Whether any given supplier is on simplified or standard registration is something you can check on your invoice: look for an ABN. If there is one, talk to your accountant about claiming. If there is an ARN or no number at all, the ABN field is your only route.

What about the reverse charge?

Once your ABN is on file and GST is no longer being charged, the question becomes whether you owe GST yourself.

For most businesses buying Claude, no. The reverse charge rules apply where you acquire something from offshore for a purpose that is not fully creditable - for example, partly private use, or use in making input-taxed supplies. Where the subscription is acquired wholly for your business and the acquisition would be fully creditable, there is generally nothing to remit and nothing to claim. Nil net effect.

Where it does apply - say a sole trader using Claude 60% for the business and 40% personally, or a business making input-taxed supplies such as certain financial services or residential rent - there is a real liability on the non-creditable portion. That is an apportionment question and exactly the kind of thing to hand to your accountant rather than guess at.

What Claude actually costs an Australian business, landed

New subscriptions bought from Australia now pay the listed AUD price. Older USD subscriptions land higher or lower depending on whether an ABN is on file. Here is the landed cost both ways.

PlanNew subscription (AUD, incl. GST)Older USD subscription, no ABNOlder USD subscription, ABN on file
ProA$34/mo (A$28 annual)~A$35~A$32
Max 5×A$170/mo~A$175~A$159
Max 20×A$340/mo~A$350~A$318
Team (per Standard seat)A$43/seat (A$34 annual)--

USD columns convert at about 1.55, the rate implied by Anthropic's own AUD prices, and include a typical 2-3% card foreign transaction fee.

Two costs people miss when they budget:

The foreign transaction fee on USD billing. Older USD subscriptions and API usage are still charged in USD, and most Australian cards add 2-3% on top. Over a year on a USD Max 20× seat that is roughly A$100 of pure friction, avoidable with a card that waives international fees or by letting the plan lapse and buying again in AUD.

The exchange rate on the day. For USD-billed plans, your invoice amount moves month to month even though the USD price does not. Budget on the pessimistic end of the range rather than the spot rate you looked up today.

Getting your invoices in order

A short checklist for whoever does your bookkeeping.

Add the ABN first, then subscribe. Forward-only means the order matters.

Download invoices from Billing. Anthropic makes PDFs available in the billing section. Do not rely on the card statement line - it will not carry the tax detail your accountant needs.

Check what number is on the invoice. ABN or ARN determines whether a credit is even available to you.

Code it as a software subscription expense. Claude subscriptions are an ordinary deductible business expense for income tax purposes, in the same bucket as any other SaaS tool.

On USD billing, keep the USD amount and the AUD charge. The invoice is denominated in USD and your bank charged AUD. Recording both makes reconciliation and any FX gain or loss treatment straightforward.

Do it once for every seat. On Team and Enterprise plans billing is centralised, so this is one job. Where staff have bought individual Pro subscriptions on personal cards and expensed them, every one of those is separately exposed to the same problem - which is one more reason to consolidate onto Team.

The wider point

The GST question is usually the first sign of a bigger one: nobody owns the AI subscriptions.

The pattern we see repeatedly in Australian small businesses is four or five people who each expensed a Claude Pro seat on a personal card, all paying GST they cannot claim, none of them on the same plan, no admin visibility, no shared Projects, and no written rule about what company data is safe to put in. The GST is the cheapest part of that problem.

Consolidating onto a single plan with an ABN on file, one invoice, an admin console and a clear data boundary fixes the tax question as a side effect of fixing the governance one. That is most of what our done-for-you Claude setup is: workspace configuration, plan selection, Projects, custom Skills, and a written data-handling policy your team will actually follow.

Does Anthropic charge GST in Australia?

Yes, by default. Anthropic adds 10% Australian GST to Claude subscriptions because imported services and digital products sold to Australian consumers have been subject to GST since 1 July 2017 under the inbound intangible consumer supplies rules. However, those rules apply to consumers rather than businesses - if you enter your ABN under Settings → Billing and confirm you are registered for GST, Anthropic stops charging GST on future invoices.

How do I add my ABN to Claude billing?

Open Claude, go to Settings → Billing, and find the tax or ABN field behind the Update control next to your payment method. Enter your ABN, confirm you are registered for GST, and save. The 10% comes off from your next invoice. Do this before you subscribe if possible, because Anthropic applies billing changes forward only and states that completed invoices cannot be updated retroactively.

Can I claim GST back on my Claude subscription?

Usually not, which is why adding your ABN matters. Claiming a GST credit requires a valid tax invoice showing the supplier ABN. Offshore digital suppliers commonly register under the ATO simplified GST registration system, which issues an ATO Reference Number rather than an ABN, and the ATO is explicit that an entity holding an ARN cannot hold an ABN. GST charged by a simplified-registration supplier generally does not support an input tax credit, so the 10% is unrecoverable cost. Check your invoice for an ABN, and speak to your accountant.

Do I have to reverse charge GST on Claude after adding my ABN?

For most businesses, no. The reverse charge applies where an offshore acquisition is not fully creditable - for example partly private use, or use in making input-taxed supplies such as certain financial services or residential rent. Where a Claude subscription is acquired wholly for business purposes and would be fully creditable, there is generally nothing to remit and nothing to claim, so the net effect is nil. Apportionment for mixed use is a question for your accountant.

Is a Claude subscription tax deductible in Australia?

Yes. A Claude subscription used for business is an ordinary deductible business expense for income tax purposes, coded the same way as any other software or SaaS subscription. That is separate from the GST question - deductibility for income tax and recoverability of GST are two different tests, and a subscription can be fully deductible while the GST on it is not recoverable.

What does Claude actually cost an Australian business including GST and fees?

New subscriptions bought from Australia pay the listed AUD price with GST included: Pro is A$34 a month (A$28 on annual billing), Max A$170 or A$340, and Team A$43 per Standard seat (A$34 annual). Older USD subscriptions land differently: Pro at US$20 comes to around A$32 a month with an ABN on file, or about A$35 without one, once you add a typical 2-3% card foreign transaction fee. Max 5× on USD billing lands near A$159 with an ABN versus about A$175 without. USD-billed amounts move month to month with the exchange rate, so budget on the pessimistic end rather than the spot rate.

Can I get a past Claude invoice reissued without GST?

Possibly, but do not count on it. Anthropic applies billing changes forward only and states that completed invoices cannot be updated retroactively. Getting a past invoice reissued with correct tax treatment requires raising a support request, and the outcome is not guaranteed. This is why the ABN should go in before you subscribe rather than after the first bill arrives.

Does the ABN field work for Claude Team and API billing too?

For API usage billed through the Console and for older Pro and Max subscriptions still billed in USD, yes - those carry GST on top, so the ABN field works exactly as described. New subscriptions bought from Australia are different: Anthropic now lists Pro, Max and Team in AUD with GST included (Team is A$34 per Standard seat on annual billing, A$43 monthly), so check how GST is shown on your first invoice before assuming the ABN takes 10% off. On Team and Enterprise plans billing is centralised, so it is a single job for the whole organisation. Where staff have instead bought individual Pro seats on personal cards and expensed them, each of those subscriptions is separately exposed to unrecoverable GST - one of several reasons to consolidate onto a Team plan.
