Claude Free vs Pro (2026): Limits, What You Lose, and When to Upgrade

by Sandlabs Team, Founder, Sandlabs

Quick answer. Claude Free costs nothing and is more capable than most people expect: Sonnet and Haiku, web search, file creation and code execution, memory, Artifacts, Skills, connectors, and up to five Projects. Claude Pro costs US$20 a month (US$17 on annual billing), or A$34 including GST from Australia (A$28 on annual billing), and adds four things: at least 5x the usage per five-hour session, Opus, Claude Code, and Research, plus unlimited Projects and Claude in Chrome and Microsoft 365. Stay on Free if you use Claude a few times a week. Upgrade the first week you hit the Free limit on real work more than twice, or the day you want Claude Code or Cowork.

Every figure below was checked against Anthropic's pricing page and help centre in late October 2026.

What Claude Free actually includes

The Free plan is not a demo. You get the same Claude app on web, desktop and mobile, with:

  • Sonnet and Haiku, Anthropic's everyday models.
  • Web search, so answers can cite current pages.
  • File creation and code execution, including spreadsheets, documents and charts.
  • Memory across conversations.
  • Artifacts, Skills and connectors, so Free users can build small tools, load a Skill and connect apps.
  • Claude Design, Slides and Docs.
  • Up to five Projects, each with its own files and instructions.

For a student, a curious owner, or someone checking whether Claude suits their work, that is a lot.

How the Free limits work

Free has no published message count. Anthropic meters usage in tokens, and everything in a conversation counts: your message, the whole thread replayed as context, any attached files and Project knowledge, and what Claude writes back.

The allowance runs on a five-hour session window that starts with your first message, plus a weekly limit that resets at a fixed time assigned to your account. When either runs out, you wait for it to reset. In practice the five-hour window is the one Free users hit; the weekly limit only bites if you hit the session limit most days.

In practice, from the people we set up:

  • A few short questions a day rarely hit the limit.
  • One real task (a long document review, a 30-turn drafting session, a big spreadsheet) can use the whole allowance in under an hour.
  • Busy periods make it tighter. Anthropic can reduce Free capacity at peak times, and Free users are the first to feel it.

Our Claude usage limits guide covers what burns an allowance fastest and the habits that stretch it, on every plan.

What you lose by staying on Free

Four gaps matter in practice:

  1. Headroom. Pro's allowance is at least five times bigger per session. This is the reason most people upgrade.
  2. Opus. Free runs Sonnet and Haiku. For long reasoning, careful analysis and complex writing, Opus is noticeably better.
  3. Claude Code. Free does not include it at all, in the terminal or in an IDE. If you write code, this alone decides it.
  4. Research. Pro's multi-step research mode, which reads widely and writes a cited report, is not on Free.

Smaller ones: no Cowork for longer hand-off tasks, the five-Project cap, no Claude in Chrome or Microsoft 365, no scheduled tasks, and no way to buy your way past a limit with usage credits.

Signs you have outgrown Free

Upgrade when any of these is true for two weeks running:

  • You hit the Free limit more than twice a week on work you care about.
  • You catch yourself rationing questions or splitting a task across days to stay under the limit.
  • You want Claude Code for anything beyond a one-off.
  • You are pasting the same context into new chats because you have used up your five Projects.
  • Claude's answers on hard problems are close but not quite there, and Opus would close the gap.

At A$34 a month against a A$120/hour loaded staff cost, Pro pays for itself after about 17 minutes saved a month. Our Claude Pro plan guide has the full Pro decision, including Pro vs Max and monthly vs annual billing.

When Free is enough

Stay on Free if:

  • You use Claude a few times a week, mostly for quick questions and short drafts.
  • You are evaluating Claude before a team rollout and want to see the basics first.
  • You do not write code and do not need Opus-level reasoning.

There is no downside to starting on Free and upgrading later. Your conversations, Projects and memory carry over when you upgrade.

Free vs Pro for a business

Neither is a business plan. On both Free and Pro, Anthropic can use your conversations to train its models unless you turn that off in your privacy settings, and neither gives you shared Projects, an admin console, SSO or central billing.

If two or more people use Claude for work, look at Claude Team: from A$34 a seat on annual billing (A$43 monthly), 2-seat minimum, with training off by default. Our Claude Team vs Enterprise comparison covers the business plans and the data questions in detail, and the Claude pricing guide has every plan side by side in USD and AUD.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between Claude Free and Pro?

Claude Free includes Sonnet and Haiku, web search, file creation, memory, Artifacts, Skills, connectors and up to five Projects, with a usage allowance that resets every five hours. Claude Pro costs US$20 a month (A$34 including GST from Australia) and adds at least 5x the usage per session, Opus, Claude Code, Research, unlimited Projects, Claude in Chrome and Microsoft 365, scheduled tasks, and usage credits to keep working past a limit.

What are the Claude free plan limits?

Claude Free has no fixed message count. Usage is metered in tokens across a five-hour session window that starts with your first message, plus a weekly limit. Long conversations, large files and Project knowledge use the allowance faster. When it runs out you wait for the window to reset. Free capacity can also be reduced at busy times.

Is Claude Pro worth it over Free?

Yes, if you use Claude for real work most days, hit the Free limit more than twice a week, or want Claude Code or Opus. At A$34 a month it pays for itself after about 17 minutes saved a month at a A$120/hour staff cost. If you only ask a few questions a week, Free is enough.

Does Claude Free include Claude Code?

No. Claude Code is included with Pro, Max, Team and Enterprise, not with the Free plan. It can also be used with a Claude Console account billed per token at API rates.

How much is Claude Pro in Australia?

Viewed from Australia, Anthropic lists Claude Pro at A$34 a month, or A$28 a month on annual billing (A$340 up front), with 10% GST included. In the US it is US$20 a month, or US$17 on annual billing.
